The amazing Hydrangea that everyone is talking about!! Forget those dull seaside displays of blues and pinks, 'Miss Saori' is something different. And this was recognised when it won the Best Plant 2014 at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Such has been the popularity of this stunning hydrangea that plants remains scarce, although we have once again secured stock of these sought-after beauties for our customers this year.
So what is all the fuss about? Well, each flower is fully double, which is unusual for Hydrangeas. To top this, each petal looks sugar-coated with lipstick-pink edging, fading subtly to the centre, creating a wonderful effect when the huge flowerhead is seen.
Bred in Japan by the world's premier Hydrangea hybridiser, 'Miss Saori' also repeat flowers, as it flowers on both young and old wood - this removes many of the conundrums of pruning, making it easier to manage, and longer flowering than conventional types. As if this was not enough, as cooler autumn approaches, and the final flowers blossom, the leaves turn burgundy purple, presenting the perfect foil for the flowers.

Top Tips
- Hydrangeas love to be kept well watered, and will produce bigger, glossier, more substantial leaves when provided with regular moisture.
- Try to use rainwater to water hydrangeas, since mains hard water can affect the flower colour, turning blue flowers mauve or pink.
- Hydrangeas with blue or pink flowers tend to be blue in acid soil conditions, mauve in acid to neutral soil conditions, and pink in alkaline conditions.
- Cultivars with blue flowers can be kept blue by growing the plants in acidic soil (pH 4.5-5), or by acidifying soils.
- Hydrangea colourants can also be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Care Information
- This plant is at its best in a most soils as long as it is well drained, in sun or partial shade. The more sun the plant gets, the better the flower colour, although bear in mind too much sun can quickly fade colours.
- A moisture-loving plant, remember to water regularly and deeply.
- Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it’s advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely.
- Pruning is not necessary as plant will flower on both old and new growth.
- If needed, to remove dead or damaged branches, it's generally best carried out early spring. A general tidy up is usually all that is needed and consists of removing the dead bloom from each stem, cutting back to the first strong, healthy pair of buds down from the faded flower.
