Description

New to our range and a defininte must-have, this is your chance to get a superb, long flowering perennial plant that will fill your garden with striking blue flowers.

Lavatera 'Blue Bird' is a compact perennial Mallow (or Malva), growing to around 1m (3-4ft) and producing a spectacular show of blue flowers from June to October.

Also known as a Tree mallow, its lobed, green leaves are also an attractive feature being roughly heart-shaped, bringing texture and form to your garden.

Its naturally shorter stature means that it's perfect for growing in a pot, particularly if your soil is on the heavy side, your mallow will form a mound of subtle blue flowers for a long period.

An easy plant to grow for even beginner gardeners, 'Blue Bird’ is reliable and fully hardy, returning to your garden year after year.

Supplied in a 3L pot, ready for immediate planting. Dormant November to March.

Top Tips
  • Mallow can be slow to break bud in spring so be patient with plants that might appear to have died over winter as they may still be dormant.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Lavatera

  • Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Alternatively, can be grown successfully in a pot.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds.
  • Water your potted shrub well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a conditioner such as well rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If planting in a container, use the best compost that you can buy (our premium compost is ideal) and add some stones or gravel to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage and also to provide some ballast to stop the pot blowing over.

Aftercare Advice for your Tree Mallow

  • Your mallow will need regular water when first planted until established. After that, they fairly maintenance free.
  • Feed plants regularly during the growing season with a general-purpose feed such as our Blooming Fast soluble fertiliser.

Pruning Advice

  • Pruning lavatera is best undertaken in spring when all risk of frost has passed, and new buds are swelling.
  • Prune all stems back to about 30cm (12in) above ground level.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
