Pear Trees

Pear trees in the UK are best pruned in winter while they are dormant, usually between November and early March. The ideal window is late winter, around February, once the worst frosts have passed but before new growth begins. Summer pruning can also be done in July or August, mainly to control size and encourage fruiting spurs, especially on trained trees like cordons or espaliers.

Pruning a pear tree is all about balance and airflow. Start by removing any dead, damaged or diseased wood. Next, take out branches that cross, rub or grow inwards towards the centre of the tree. Aim for an open, goblet-shaped structure that allows light and air to reach all parts of the canopy. Shorten overly long shoots to a healthy outward-facing bud and try not to remove more than about a quarter of the tree in one go. Pear trees respond best to steady, light pruning rather than heavy cuts.

Many pear trees are not self-fertile, so they need to be planted near another compatible variety for pollination. That said, some modern varieties are partially or fully self-fertile and will crop on their own, though yields are usually better with a pollination partner. Even if you only plant one tree, a neighbour's pear tree or one growing in the wider area can often provide enough pollen for a decent harvest.

Unlike apples, pears generally do not ripen properly if left on the tree. They are usually picked when mature but still firm and then allowed to ripen indoors. Once harvested, pears soften and develop their full flavour over a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the variety. A good rule of thumb is that if the fruit lifts easily when gently twisted, it is ready to pick.

Pear trees typically bloom in spring, most often during April in the UK. The blossom appears slightly earlier than apple blossom and is a welcome sight after winter. Because pear flowers open relatively early, late frosts can sometimes affect crops, which is why a sheltered planting spot can make a real difference.

Pear trees are not instant performers, but they are well worth the wait. Most begin to produce fruit around three to five years after planting, depending on the rootstock and growing conditions. Full maturity and heavier cropping usually develop after six to ten years. Once established, a pear tree can remain productive for decades.
