Peach Trees

Newly planted peach trees are best pruned in early spring in the UK, usually from March to April, just after the buds open, while established, free-standing peach trees should be pruned in summer, after fruiting. Pruning at this point reduces the risk of disease such as silver leaf and helps the tree heal quickly. Avoid winter pruning, as peaches are more vulnerable to infection when cut in cold, damp conditions.

Peach trees fruit on one year old wood, so pruning focuses on encouraging fresh, young growth. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches first, then thin out overcrowded shoots to let in plenty of light and air. Aim for an open, goblet shaped tree with strong outward facing branches. Cut back last year’s fruited shoots, keeping well spaced new shoots that will carry the next crop.

Peaches do soften slightly after picking, but they develop their best flavour and sweetness on the tree. For the best eating quality, leave peaches to ripen fully while still attached. A ripe peach should feel slightly soft and come away easily in the hand.

Peach trees benefit from feeding once in early spring as growth begins. Use a balanced fertiliser or one specifically formulated for fruit trees. A second light feed in early summer can help support fruit development, especially for fruit trees grown in pots. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to lots of leafy growth at the expense of the valuable fruit.

Most peach trees begin to flower in early spring, usually March or April, depending on the weather. Fruits develop quickly after flowering and are typically ready to harvest from July through to September. Young trees may flower early but produce only a small crop at first.

The best time to plant bare root peach trees is from late autumn to early spring, while the tree is dormant. November to March works well in the UK, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Container grown trees can also be planted in spring, giving them time to establish before winter.

Peach trees are relatively quick to crop. Most start producing fruit within two to three years of planting. Grafted trees often fruit sooner than those grown from seed, especially when grown in a warm, sheltered position.
