Caring for Topiary Plants

Topiary is much easier to care for than many gardeners expect. Water regularly during the first season while the plant establishes, especially during warm or dry weather. Plants in pots dry out faster than those in the ground, so check them more often through spring and summer.

Trim shaped topiary lightly during the growing season to maintain its outline. Little and often usually gives the neatest finish, rather than cutting back hard after the plant has lost shape. Use sharp, clean shears or topiary clippers, and stand back regularly to check the shape as you work.

A slow-release feed in spring will support healthy growth, while a mulch around the base helps conserve moisture. With simple care, topiary tree forms, clipped bushes and formal hedges will keep their smart appearance for years, giving your garden dependable structure in every season.
