Indoor Flowering Plants

Most indoor plants will flower once their basic needs are met. This often changes by variety, but typically bright light is essential, even if it is indirect, as plants kept too far from windows often grow leaves but fail to bloom. Regular feeding during spring and summer also plays a big part, especially with a balanced or flowering houseplant feed. Watering should be steady rather than excessive, as soggy compost encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Many flowering houseplants also benefit from a gentler winter period with slightly reduced watering, which helps trigger buds when growth restarts.

Some houseplants are far more reliable bloomers than others. Peace lilies are among the most dependable, producing elegant white flowers and bracts in bright rooms and coping well with everyday indoor conditions. Anthuriums are another strong choice, valued for their glossy foliage and bold, long-lasting flowers that add colour for weeks on end. These plants suit modern homes and reward consistent care with eye-catching blooms.

Most indoor flowering plants arrive already potted, but planting them correctly still matters. Always choose a pot with drainage holes and use a good-quality houseplant compost rather than garden soil. Keep the plant at the same depth it was growing before and firm the compost gently around the roots. Water lightly after planting and position the plant in a bright spot away from strong direct sun. Avoid using an oversized pot, as this encourages root growth instead of flowers. Consider slotting your potted plant into a decorative pot cover for an ornamental look but without the drainage holes, to avoid spillages on your furniture. Simply remove the potted houseplant from the pot cover each time you give it a drink, placing on the draining board until it soaks through.

Good care is about regular habits rather than hard work. Water when the surface of the compost feels dry and never allow the pot to sit in water. Keep plants in bright light and rotate them occasionally so growth stays even all the way around. Feed during the growing season to support flowering and remove spent blooms to encourage new ones. Most indoor flowering plants prefer stable temperatures and dislike cold draughts.

Anthuriums are among the longest-flowering indoor plants. Their bold, waxy flowers can last for many weeks at a time and often reappear throughout the year when the plant is kept in good light and fed regularly.
