Description

What a treasure this plant is. The Common Myrtle is an evergreen shrub with so many drawing features for your garden - it’s good-looking all year, fragrant, reliable, and it even flowers abundantly in summer.

The leaves are dark green and beautifully glossy. Brush your hand through them or crush one with your hand to release a fragrant aroma. It's no wonder this variety has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark of a reliable, proven garden plant.

In summer, the whole shrub bursts into life with masses of white flowers, each around 2cm across, star-like and sweetly scented. They're loved by bees and butterflies. Then, as the flowers fade, you'll get attractive purplish-black berries that continue the display into autumn.

Fully hardy and easy to grow, forming a dense, bushy mound that keeps its leaves all year round. It makes a fine specimen in a pot, looks superb as an informal hedge and provides an excellent backdrop for your other flowering plants.

It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and copes well with coastal conditions, too.

Top Tips
Trim lightly after flowering if you want to keep a neat shape or to encourage bushier growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood. Remove any damaged or wayward stems as needed.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • When your Myrtle arrives, carefully unpack it straight away and remove any packaging. If the compost feels dry, give it a light water and let any excess drain away. Keep the plant in a bright, sheltered spot outdoors while you prepare its final position.
  • If you can’t plant immediately, it will be quite happy in its pot for a week or two as long as it's kept watered and frost-free.

Where to Plant:

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered site - ideally one that's protected from cold winds and severe frosts.
  • Myrtle thrives in well-drained soil and loves warmth, so it's particularly at home near a south-facing wall or patio. It can also be grown in a large container using a high-quality compost mixed with a little grit added for extra drainage.

How to Plant:

  • Dig a hole roughly twice as wide and just as deep as the pot.
  • Loosen the soil at the base and mix in some well-rotted compost or organic matter.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and gently tease out any circling roots.
  • Place it in the hole at the same depth it was growing in the pot.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Water well after planting.

Ongoing Care:

  • Keep the compost evenly moist while the plant is establishing. Once settled, Myrtle is fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells or when grown in pots. Avoid leaving it sitting in water.
  • Myrtle is fully hardy in most of the UK once established, but young plants appreciate protection from harsh frost. If you live in a colder region, grow it in a pot so you can move it into a frost-free greenhouse, porch, or conservatory during severe cold. Mulching around the base in autumn helps insulate roots.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
