Product Information

With its opulent foliage colour, leaves emerge a rich orange-red, before they mature to burgundy, creating a stunning show which ends in autumn as the leaves turn red and purple before falling in an extravagant cascade of colour.

The show isn't restricted to the leaves however, as 'Little Angel' is shrub with exceptional year-round interest. In early summer, dense clusters of creamy, pink-tinged flowers form neat balls of bloom and these are followed in autumn by burgundy fruit pods which extend the colour in your garden right up to leaf-fall!

A compact shrub, bred to perform in your garden, Physocarpus Little Angel is a garden plant that very few other gardeners will have, and its colour changing nature makes this a garden must-have and certainly a plant that you'll want to give pride of place to so that everyone can see it! The unique foliage will form the perfect backdrop for your other garden plants and goes especially well with blues and purples.

Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots, ready for planting out or potting on, Physocarpus Little Angel Ninebark will reach around 1m in 10 years and is really easy to grow - the perfect garden plant for any level of experience!

Top Tips

Remove older stems and thin to show off colourful young stems to best effect. Cut back after flowering.

Care Information

  • Plant Physocarpus in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Plants prefer slightly acid soil, so working well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole will help towards conditioning the soil.
  • Water regularly through the growing season until fully established.
  • After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless you want to keep the seedpods for autumn interest.
  • On mature plants, cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
  • Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and can be cut back by half every few years to keep it compact if you need to.
  • After pruning, apply a mulch of well-rotted compost to the base of the plant.

To Plant:

  • Before planting, water your potted shrub well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well rotted compost to the soil removed from the hole.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
Firm in the soil with your hands avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If potting on, choose a good quality, soil-based compost and use a 2L pot initially.
