Product Information

A stunning collection of hardy Gardenias, these beautiful compact shrubs will cast a spell on you with their lush, evergreen foliage and enchanting white flowers that will fill your garden with their exquisite, jasmine-like fragrance – one of the most intoxicating scents you’ll ever experience. They’ll flower from July until September, giving you a summer long treat of flowers and fragrance.

These are new varieties of hardier Gardenias, and so can be kept outside all winter as long as they receive protection from the coldest weather, and as they’re evergreen, they’ll look great whatever the season. They make wonderful specimen plants in large patio containers and are stunning in borders too. Easy to care for, requiring little pruning apart from a trim each spring and the removal of dead stems. Preferring acid soil, use ericaceous compost when growing in pots.

Supplied as 3 established plants in 9 cm pots, ready for planting and, including:

Gardenia jasminoides ‘Crown Jewel’ – Small yet covered in large fully double flowers and perfect for growing in a pot, reaching a height of 70 cm (2½ ft) and spread of 60 cm (2 ft).

Gardenia jasminoides ‘Sweet Heart’ – Earlier to flower than other varieties with simple, single flowers, reaching a height and spread of 1.2 m (4 ft).

Top Tips

  • Although Gardenias prefer full sun, some shade is necessary during the hotter months of the year to prevent leaf scorch and bud drop.

Care Information

Planting your Gardenia

  • Outside, choose a sheltered position, ideally in dappled or partial shade.
  • Plants prefer well-drained, fertile and slightly acidic soil or can be grown in a large container of ericaceous (acid) compost.
  • Before planting, water well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pots.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole along with some ericaceous compost if necessary.
  • Remove the plants from their pots and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plants in their holes at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the holes with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil avoiding the root ball of the plants.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of each plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice

  • Feed your gardenias well throughout the growing season (spring and summer) with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser in summer to avoid yellowing of the leaves.
  • Water regularly until your plants are fully established - use rainwater where possible and keep the soil moist (but not saturated).
  • Over winter, although perfectly hardy, plants will benefit from some protection if it gets very cold. You can move container grown plants into a frost-free area or cover with good horticultural fleece.
  • Continue to feed plants with a balanced fertiliser over winter but reduce to once every 5-6 weeks. Reduce watering too, but do not allow the soil to fully dry out.

Pruning Advice

  • Remove faded flowers to improve the appearance of your plants.
  • If necessary, trim lightly in early spring after flowering to help maintain a neat shape.
