Product Information

A Sarracenia hybrid, Scarlet Belle is a cross between the white top pitcher (Sarracenia leucophylla) and the parrot pitcher (Sarracenia psittacina). Also known as S x wrigleyana, its winter hardy to around -12C.

The small, beautifully hooded pitchers grow in a low rosette to around 10-20cm (4-8in) and use a lobster pot method to trap prey. Each pitcher has a small entrance at its mouth, into which the insect crawls in search of nectar which is produced by the plant on the rim. The hapless invertebrate is then confused by what appears to be light shining through false windows and crawls toward the brighter area down into the pitcher. Criss-crossed downward-facing hairs densely line the interior of the pitcher, forcing the prey further into the pitcher to an area where digestive enzymes do their job!

A robust plant, it matures and spreads quite quickly with its main growth is in the spring and late summer. Sarracenia 'Scarlet Belle' is also keeps its foliage much longer into dormancy than many other varieties of Sarracenia and has a very high tolerance to cold.

The colour of Scarlet Belle is best under full sun, although the plant tolerates lower light and will still develop nice colour. Plants do need 6 or more hours of direct sunlight however to thrive.

Supplied as a large established plant in a 9cm pot, much bigger than plants offered for sale elsewhere, ready to give you an instant pest clearing service!

Top Tips

Secret of success - always rain water, never tap water, allow a period of winter rest

Care Information

How to grow Sarracenia 'Scarlet Belle'

  • Plants require a permanent source of moisture and direct, bright sunlight to thrive. Try not to be tempted by terrariums and plants in bottles as this reduces the amount of light available and plants will not thrive.
  • Generally, plants are best grown in an unheated greenhouse or on a bright, sunny windowsill, although can be grown outside in a sheltered area.
  • Because plants naturally grow in nutrient poor bogs, they need a constant supply of water - rain water or deionised water should be used - NEVER tap water.
  • Like other insectivorous plants, stand pots in water all year round, Sarracenias like to be in around 2-3in (5-7cm) depth of water to replicate their natural bog habitat.
  • Exotic, sometimes fragrant Flowers are produced from February and can be removed once they have faded.

Spring/Summer care:

  • Keep plants permanently in a tray of rain water to 7cm (3in) deep.
  • Don't be tempted to feed plants yourself, they'll catch all that they need themselves. If you must, just leave them outside for a few days in the summer to 'catch up'.
  • Never apply fertiliser to the plants.

Autumn/Winter Care

  • As autumn approaches, the pitchers will turn brown and your plant will start to die back. This is perfectly normal, and you can safely trim off any dead growth.
  • Some Sarracenia will also produce flat, non-carnivorous leaves without pitchers called phyllodia during autumn to help maximise photosynthesis so leave these in place.
  • Pitcher plants require a cold winter dormancy period between November and February, otherwise they become weak and will eventually expire. Temperatures in their natural habitats frequently dip below freezing over winter (0C / 32F), and so you must provide a cold season for them.
  • Typically, if you keep your plants indoors, you will need to move them somewhere colder - next to a window in an unheated shed or garage is ideal.
  • The end of the winter dormancy period is a good opportunity to repot - and even divide - your plants, if they require it - you'll know because the plant will look like it's trying to escape from its pot! Use a proprietary carnivorous plant compost.
