Description

Classic garden treasures... Lily of the Valley, or Convallaria majalis, celebrate spring by coating the ground with arching stems of tiny white bell flowers, which smell absolutely divine.

The fragrance is sweet, fresh, and powerful. You'll smell it as the flowers arrive in April and May, bobbing above glossy green foliage that stays neat and handsome through the season. The blooms grow abundantly, creating an aromatic carpet full of charm. This is groundcover done differently!

What's more, this is a plant with heritage. It's a proper cottage garden staple, known for spreading gently over time through underground roots called 'pips'. Once established, it naturalises beautifully and needs very little attention. Give it moist soil and a bit of dappled shade and it'll just get better every year.

Just as happy in a shady patio pot as it is in the garden, and the flowers make wonderful cut stems for bringing indoors too. And if you enjoy a bit of folklore, in France, Lily of the Valley is gifted on 1st May as a symbol of love and good fortune. Who wouldn't want that growing by the front door?

Top Tips
Lily of the Valley does best when grown on in a pot before planting out into the garden from May - it dislikes being planted directly into cold, wet soil.
Care Information
  • Despite having a temperamental reputation, Lily of the Valley is easy to grow.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the roots.
  • Spread out any underground stems and cover with just a couple of inches of the planting mixture.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Mulch well with leafmould or well-rotted compost.
  • Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.
  • If you find that flowering is poor, an occasional dose of high-potash organic liquid feed may help.
