Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their mini greenhouse for a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover.
  • Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as on a windowsill or in the greenhouse.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
  • Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
  • Plant approx. 20cm apart to allow them room to grow.
  • Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser for Flowers & Fruits, to encourage flowering.
  • Salvias grow best in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, avoid excessively exposed areas and waterlogged soils.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established.
  • Although perennial, these Salvia will require some winter protection outdoors in the form of a straw mulch and if growing it in containers, move to a cold greenhouse or conservatory to prevent the cold from penetrating to the roots.
  • In spring, apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Pruning Advice:

  • Prune lightly in late spring when new growth appears to remove dead stems and to maintain a bushy shape.
