Product Information

Paperwhites, Narcissus papyraceus, are natives of northern Africa and southern Europe where they grow wild in the stony, free draining soil.

The tiny pure white flowers may only be 2 cm across but there could well be 15 of them on each stem, each one carrying an incredibly sweet, heady fragrance. What’s more, there will often be two stems per bulb, so the blooms really will be abundant.

In the UK climate they are best grown indoors and if planted in November they will be flowering throughout Christmas, just 6 to 8 weeks later if the temperature is around 21°C. They take longer if they’re cooler. Plant them close together for maximum impact and choose a fairly deep pot, as they have deep roots. If planting outdoors, ensure good drainage in a sheltered spot to avoid frost pockets.

Supplied as a pack of 10 bulbs, size 14/15 ready to plant in autumn and growing to a height of 50cm (20 in) and width of 10 cm (4 in).

Top Tips

  • For a natural look, throw a handful onto a grassy area and plant them where they fall.
  • Which way up? Usually pointy end up, but if you are not sure, plant the bulb on its side and it will right itself.
  • Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots before planting to encourage faster and more reliable establishment.
  • Propagate by removing offsets in the early summer to populate new areas.

Planting Advice

  • Plant bulbs at twice the depth of the height of the bulb and four times their width apart. e.g. 5 cm tall bulbs need to be planted 10 cm below the surface of the ground and 10 cm apart.
  • They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they'll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.
  • Leave them in the ground once they die back and they'll come back bigger and better each year.
  • While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.
  • If planted in pots be sure to water frequently and keep moist.

Aftercare Advice

  • Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in the autumn for displays next season. This allows them to establish a good root system before the weather becomes too cold.
  • Plant in herbaceous borders, in pots, or leave in the ground to naturalise.
  • Water frequently and if in pots ensure that the compost doesn't dry out.
  • Use a good quality potting compost such as our premium professional compost for the best results.

Cutting your daffodils back

  • Leave foliage to die back naturally after flowering, never tie up the foliage or cut it back while still green.
  • This allows as much energy as possible to go back into the bulbs for the following year. Only cut back the foliage once it has turned yellow or brown.
