Top Tips

  • To maximise cropping, plant where the bushes will receive plenty of direct sunlight.
  • Keep plants consistently watered to ensure fruits are juicy and well-formed.
  • If planting in a container, use the best compost you can buy, adding some sand or grit for drainage.
  • Protect the ripening fruit from birds with fine gauge netting if you need to.

Care Information

Follow any specific planting and aftercare instructions supplied with your individual plants.

Planting Advice:

  • Plant container-grown plants at any time, avoiding waterlogged, dry or frozen soil. If in doubt, err towards spring, but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot. Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole or add mychorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish more quickly.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots. Place your plant in the hole at the same level as the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the rootball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel or bark.
  • If your garden soil has a pH over 5.5, blueberry bushes are best grown in a pot, in ericaceous soil, and watered with rainwater, as tap water will gradually raise pH levels. If growing blueberries in the garden, add plenty of organic matter such as pine needles or composted conifer clippings. Avoid farmyard manure as it will scorch the roots.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Mulch plants to conserve soil moisture.
  • Water regularly and especially during dry spells. Container-grown fruits should be watered as soon as their soil dries out.
  • Feed in late winter with a balanced, granular feed.
