Product Information

Easy to grow and perfect for eating fresh or in puddings, pies and crumbles, gooseberries are one of those traditional favourite fruits that no garden should be without.

A member of the currant family, gooseberries are often thought of as a prickly nuisance with nasty sour fruits, but that couldn't be further from the truth - 'Lady Sun' produces large, sweet and crisp gooseberries and being nearly thornless is much easier to harvest from.

Perfect for containers and fruit gardens where it will lend itself perfectly to grow Your Own, this is a reliable and high cropping, self-fertile variety, with an upright, bushy habit and good disease resistance.

Ideally suited to the UK climate, they're really easy to look after and are winter hardy, shrugging off freezing temperatures with ease - so are the perfect gooseberry for beginner gardeners or those of us who want good results with no faff.

Organically grown by expert nurserymen, these gooseberries are rich in vitamin C, B vitamins as well as minerals such as potassium and magnesium so are a very healthy addition to your garden!
Supplied as an established plant in a 12cm pot, ready for planting out, bushes reach 100cm x 60cm and will produce their crop of berries in July.

Did you know..
Gooseberries are rich in fibre and help to stimulate the digestion and reduce cholesterol. They are said to promote healthy hair and nails and help keep teeth and bones healthy. They are also purported to strengthen the vascular walls, in turn protecting against varicose veins.

Top Tips

Keep gooseberries consistently watered because if they are heavily soaked following a dry spell the fruits will swell too quickly and split.

Care Information

Planting advice for your gooseberry:

  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice for Gooseberry 'Lady Sun':

  • Mulch plants to retain moisture, and if you use garden compost or well-rotted manure this will feed your plants at the same time.
  • Water regularly and especially during dry spells. Container-grown gooseberries should be watered as soon as the top inch or so of soil dries out.
  • In late winter, feed with a balanced granular feed. Avoid feeding the plants with too much nitrogen because this can encourage weak growth, which can be prone to mildew.
  • Plant bare-root gooseberries between late autumn and early spring, and container-grown plants at any time, avoiding waterlogged, dry or frozen soil.
  • When picking, if you want berries for cooking, look for slightly underripe (but not hard) berries. For eating raw, choose berries that have a little give when squeezed.

Pruning Advice for  Lady Sun Gooseberry:

  • Year one
In early spring of the first year after planting, prune the main stems on the head back by half.
  • Year two onwards
In November, shorten the main stems that you pruned in the spring back to half of their new growth. Any new side shoots that have grown from the main shoots can also be either shortened by half or removed if they are not needed. At the same time, remove any suckers or side shoots from the trunk.
  • After year two bushes just need a simple twice-yearly trim:
In July, trim all new side shoots to 5 leaves
In winter, cut back main stems by half their new growth and any side shoots back to 2 buds (these are the shoots that you trimmed in July)
Any stems that are damaged, dead or out of place can also be removed.
