Start with a good base. If the bed sits on soil, leave the ground underneath open so roots can grow down. Add a layer of cardboard or newspaper to suppress weeds. Next, fill the bed with a mix of quality topsoil and compost. A simple rule is about 60 percent topsoil to 40 percent compost. This gives structure, nutrients and good drainage. Gently firm it down and water well to settle everything before planting.

Most raised beds work best at 20 to 30cm deep. This depth suits salads, herbs, strawberries and many vegetables. For deeper rooted crops like carrots, parsnips or potatoes, aim for 30 to 45cm. If the bed is shallow but open to the soil below, roots can still grow downwards without a problem.

Raised beds are ideal for vegetables, herbs and flowers. Leafy crops like lettuce, spinach and rocket thrive, as do herbs such as basil, parsley and chives. Tomatoes, courgettes, beans and peppers also perform well thanks to the improved drainage and warmer soil. They are also excellent for cut flowers and pollinator friendly plants.

Avoid planting large trees or shrubs as they quickly outgrow the space and drain nutrients. Very invasive plants like mint can also take over unless grown in pots. Crops that need huge depth or wide spacing, such as asparagus or globe artichokes, are usually better off in open ground.

Raised beds dry out faster than ground level soil, especially in warm or windy weather. Check moisture regularly by pushing a finger into the soil. In summer, watering every day or every other day is common, while spring and autumn usually need less. Water deeply rather than little and often to encourage strong root growth.
