Most roses are pruned in late winter or very early spring while they�re still dormant and before new growth begins. In most parts of the UK, February or early March is ideal. If you�re growing repeat-flowering shrub roses or Hybrid Teas, this is the moment to shape them for the season ahead. Ramblers are the exception and are pruned just after flowering in summer.

Start by removing anything dead, damaged or crossing, as this clears the way for healthy new shoots. Then shorten the remaining stems to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open shape that lets in light and air. Use clean, sharp secateurs and don�t be afraid to cut firmly; good pruning encourages stronger growth and better blooms.

The good news is that roses themselves are not toxic to cats. The plant material isn�t harmful, but the thorns can cause injury if a curious pet decides to chew or explore too closely. If your cat is particularly playful around plants, keep thorny stems out of reach.

Choose a healthy stem from the current season�s growth in late summer. Cut a piece about 20cm long just below the leaf joint, then remove the lower leaves. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone if you have it, and push the cutting into a pot of gritty compost. Keep it somewhere sheltered and lightly moist through autumn and winter and it should root by spring.

Dig a generous hole, enrich the soil with well-rotted compost, and sprinkle in a handful of rose feed or mycorrhizal fungi if you have some. Plant the rose so that the graft union sits just below the soil surface. Backfill, firm in, water well, and keep the soil moist while it establishes.

Feed roses in early spring as they come into growth, then again after the first flush of flowers to encourage repeat blooming. A final light feed in mid-summer helps them finish the season strongly. Use a dedicated rose fertiliser for the best results.
