Description

A Blaze Of Orange Blooms That Climbs, Trails And Transforms Your Sunny Patio For Months!

Enjoy a boost in height and bright, tropical colour in your garden with Thunbergia 'Sunny Susy New Orange'. This Black-Eyed Susan climbs, scrambles, spills and flowers enthusiastically, covering fresh green growth with glowing orange blooms from July into October.

Each flower carries that unmistakable dark eye at the centre. Train it up a cane, trellis or obelisk to create a bright vertical feature, or let it tumble from a basket or tall planter for around patios, seating areas and sunny doorways.

This is a brilliant choice where space is limited, as colour stretches upwards rather than taking over valuable floor space, while the generous flowering habit keeps the display full and cheerful through the season.

Grow in full sun, in free-draining soil or compost, and water regularly in warm weather.

This tender perennial needs protection from frost, so shelter during cold conditions or enjoy as a high-impact summer-to-autumn patio plant. The flowers are also useful for attracting bees and beneficial insects.

Top Tips

This tender perennial is not frost hardy. In colder parts of the UK, it is often grown as a summer bedding plant. To try to keep it from year to year, move container-grown plants into a frost-free greenhouse, conservatory or bright indoor space before the first frosts.

Keep it cool, bright and just lightly watered through winter, allowing the compost to become slightly drier between watering. Cut back tired growth if needed, then increase watering and feeding again in spring as fresh growth starts.

Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Unpack your Thunbergia as soon as it arrives and check the compost. If it feels dry, water thoroughly and allow it to drain. The plant has been supplied in a 2 litre nursery pot and trained to a cane, so keep it upright and place it somewhere bright, sheltered and frost-free until planting.
  • Do not plant outside if frost is forecast. This is a frost-tender plant and should only be moved outdoors once conditions are warm enough.

How To Plant Thunbergia:

  • Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position, ideally against a trellis, obelisk, fence, wall support or in a large patio container with canes.
  • Thunbergia grows best in free-draining soil or good quality multipurpose compost. Avoid heavy, cold, waterlogged ground.
  • Water the plant before planting. Dig a hole slightly larger than the nursery pot, remove the pot carefully, then position the rootball at the same depth as it was growing before.
  • Firm gently, water well, and tie or guide the young stems onto their support as they begin to grow.
  • It can also be grown in a hanging basket or tall container, where the stems will trail and soften the display.

Ongoing Care For Thunbergia:

  • Water regularly through spring and summer, especially during warm, dry spells and when growing in pots or baskets. Keep the compost evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Container-grown plants may need watering daily in hot weather.
  • Feed every 1 to 2 weeks during the main growing season with a high-potash liquid feed, such as tomato feed, to encourage strong flowering. Do not overfeed with high-nitrogen fertiliser, as this may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Guide new shoots onto their support as they grow. Lightly trim back any long, untidy or wayward stems to keep the plant neat and encourage bushier growth. Remove faded flowers and tired growth regularly to keep the display looking fresh.
