Description

One of the best known chilli peppers, the 'Cayenne' pepper is a staple of most people's spice collection as a dried powder, but what could be better that growing these fantastic peppers yourself so that you can use them fresh all summer long?

'Cayenne' is an incredibly versatile all-round chilli, and enormously popular in cooking. As with all chilli peppers, its heat is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The higher the SHU, the hotter the chilli. 'Cayenne' has an SHU of between 30,000 and 50,000, which makes it powerful enough to add a pungent kick to recipes, but not so strong that it overwhelms other flavours.

The best way to grow chillies is in pots in a warm, sunny spot such as a patio or porch, or indoors as a houseplant in a bright area. 'Cayenne' produces lots of tasty, slender chillies that grow to 15cm long and are perfect to use in a wide range of recipes when you want to add some heat. They're also great eaten raw or seared on a grill.

Growing to about 90cm tall, 'Cayenne' is an attractive patio plant and are also wonderfully decorative with the deep green leaves and glassy red chillies, often with both flowers and fruit growing at the same time.

Top Tips
  • Provide support with a small cane or stake if plants grow tall or become top-heavy with peppers.
    Care Information
    • Plant plug plants indoors or in a greenhouse from late winter to early spring.
    • Move outdoors after the last frost, typically in late spring or early summer.
    • Peppers thrive in a warm, sunny location with 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • A sheltered spot protected from strong winds is ideal.
    • Use a light, well-draining soil enriched with organic compost or a multi-purpose potting mix.
    • Plant each plug 30 - 40cm apart in rows or containers.
    • Plant so the root ball is just below the soil surface. Avoid burying the stem. Firm the soil gently around the plant and water well after planting.
    • For containers, choose pots at least 30cm in diameter with good drainage.
    • Fill with high-quality compost and follow the same planting instructions.

    Ongoing Care:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply 1 - 2 times a week, increasing during hot, dry spells.
    • Use a high-potash fertiliser, like tomato feed, every two weeks once flowers start to form. This encourages healthy development.
    • Pinch out the growing tips when the plant is about 30cm tall to encourage bushier growth.
    • Remove any side shoots if the plant becomes overcrowded.
