Description

A dramatic, modern grass that delivers structure, intense colour and thick bottlebrush spikes to the garden.

Also known as Pennisetum, this variety brings serious impact to any space. Young plants start green, before shifting through rich plum tones and settling into deep burgundy when grown in full sun. The transformation is incredible!

Every day, the foliage becomes darker, broader and more statuesque. Then come the spikes. Dense, dark and bold, they rise above the leaves from July to September, adding height that lifts the whole display.

This half-hardy perennial will often overwinter in milder gardens. Yet it behaves like an easy summer annual with quick growth and brilliant colour.

Imagine a pot on the patio standing tall and dramatic. Or a border with a deep, moody streak running through your brighter summer flowers. This is your chance to add architecture, movement and energy in one simple planting.

Top Tips

In mild areas, plants in the ground may overwinter naturally. Leave the old foliage in place as winter protection.

Care Information

How to plant:

  • Start by potting the plugs into small pots about 9cm wide. Use fresh, free-draining compost.
  • Firm gently around the rootball and water lightly. The compost should be moist, not soggy.
  • Keep the young plants in a bright, frost-free space for 2-3 weeks. A greenhouse, cold frame or windowsill is ideal.
  • Allow the roots to fill the pot before planting outside.
  • Harden them off before planting out. Place outside during the day and bring in at night for 7–10 days.
  • Once frosts have passed, plant into borders or large containers. Space plants 30-40cm apart.
  • Choose the sunniest spot you can. Full sun brings the strongest burgundy colour.

Winter care:

  • 'Purple Baron' is half-hardy. It tolerates temperatures down to around -5C once established.
  • In mild areas, plants in the ground may overwinter naturally. Leave the old foliage in place as winter protection.
  • In colder regions, treat it as an annual. Remove and compost plants after the first hard frosts.
  • If grown in pots, you can try overwintering by moving the container into a sheltered, frost-free spot such as a greenhouse or porch. Keep almost dry through winter.
  • New plants can then be planted the following spring.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
