Hedging that delivers privacy, structure, seasonal beauty and wildlife value, Privet Hedging 'Ligustrum ovalifolium' really does tick every box.
This fast-growing, semi-evergreen variety forms a dense, neat wall of glossy, dark green, oval-shaped leaves that provide an elegant backdrop to any garden. Even in cold winters, it often keeps much of its foliage, and when it does drop some leaves, fresh growth is ready to fill in by spring.
From June to August, clusters of creamy-white, pollen-rich flowers emerge, carrying a light fragrance and drawing in bees, butterflies and other pollinators. As summer fades, the blooms give way to glossy black berries that provide an additional food source for birds, adding to its wildlife-friendly credentials.
With the RHS recommending it as a 'Plant for Pollinators', you can be confident it's a variety that's as good for nature as it is for your garden design. Tough, adaptable and tolerant of pollution, it's an excellent choice for urban gardens as well as rural plots. It also takes windy conditions in its stride, making it suitable for more exposed locations.
Growing by 30-60cm a year, 'Ligustrum ovalifolium' establishes quickly into a dense hedge that responds well to regular clipping, allowing you to create crisp lines, formal shapes or a softer, more natural look. Fully hardy to -10C and happy in most soil types, it's a versatile, low-maintenance option for gardeners who want lasting results without the fuss.
