Description

Witness reliable winter interest with a Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' shrub. As the name suggests, this sets the garden alight during the colder months. When most of the garden is grey and bare, its flame-coloured stems glow in vibrant shades, like it's been lit from within.

Plus, this variety isn't just impressive in winter. It's an all-rounder, with delicate white blooms in spring that draw pollinators, followed by summertime deep green leaves that form a lush backdrop to borders. Then, come autumn, the leaves put on a colourful show of reds and ambers, before falling to unveil those fiery stems once more.

'Midwinter Fire' is fully hardy, thrives in most soils, and doesn't mind being cut back in spring to encourage the most vivid colour. It's tough, it's reliable, and it keeps looking good through the darkest part of the year.

This dogwood is incredibly versatile too. Use it as a focal point in the border, dot it through mixed shrub planting, or grow it in a big decorative pot near the patio or path where you'll see those vibrant stems up close. Wherever it goes, it earns its keep.

Top Tips
Try it amongst evergreen shrubs to really make the stems stand out in winter.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Potted Cornus:

  • Grow in full sun to partial shade.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you are planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to refill once the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot, tease out a few of the roots and add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish more quickly.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level as the pot, then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the rootball, and water well.

Aftercare Advice for Cornus:

  • Keep plants well-watered until established.

 Pruning Advice for Cornus:

  • Remove a third of the stems back to ground level in March, when the new buds start to swell to promote new growth, which has the best colour.

Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
