Description

A clematis like no other! 'Taiga' made its debut at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2017, where it stopped visitors in their tracks and was voted the most admired plant at the show. Extraordinary double, cactus dahlia-like blooms open in a cascade of deep blue-purple petals, tipped in lime cream and layered into exotic rosettes.

This climber is a real statement plant, ideal for sunny walls, a decorative obelisk, or a large container yearning for a star performer. 'Taiga' starts blooming early in summer and just keeps going, throwing out flower after flower into autumn. And because it's free-flowering from top to bottom, you'll get colour from the ground up.

At about 200cm tall, it's a manageable size for patios, trellises, and even trained up through small trees. It's hardy, low maintenance, and just needs a simple prune back to around 30cm in spring. Feed it well, water it regularly, and give it some sun with a little root shade, and you'll be rewarded with long-lasting displays, year after year.

Whether you're after something to wow the neighbours, or just want a new twist on a classic garden favourite, 'Taiga' fits the bill. It’s easy to grow, totally unique, and offers garden value that lasts for months.

Top Tips
Clematis like a cool ‘root run’ so try and plant so that the roots are shaded. If you are planting in a sunny position, place some pieces of slate or flat stones on the soil after planting or use groundcover plants to keep the roots cool.
Care Information

Planting a Potted Clematis:

  • If planting by a wall or fence - the hole should be dug approx. 30cm away from its base.
  • If planting by a tree - plant about 60cm away from the trunk leaning the cane of the clematis towards the support.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the clematis is in place.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Plant with the crown of the plant 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling), then firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water in well.

Aftercare Clematis Advice:

  • Feed in spring with a general-purpose feed, avoiding the stems. Mulch immediately afterwards with organic matter such as well-rotted manure, leaf mould or garden compost.
  • Water regularly during periods of dry weather in the first few seasons after planting, especially for container plants.
  • Clematis in pots should be given a liquid feed through the summer and early autumn.
  • 'Taiga' flowers in late summer on growth made in that season and should be pruned in late winter or early spring - simply cut back to just above a strong pair of leaf buds about 30cm above soil level.
