Planting In Pots - The Bulb Lasagne Method

• Choose a generous container with good drainage holes. Bulbs dislike sitting in cold, waterlogged compost, particularly through winter.
• Add a layer of good-quality multipurpose compost to the bottom of the pot, then plant the bulbs in layers:

Bottom layer - Tulip 'Shirley'

• Plant the ‘Shirley’ tulips deepest in the container, with the pointed ends facing upwards. Space them across the pot without allowing the bulbs to touch.
• Cover with approximately 5cm of compost.

Middle layer - Tulip 'Carnaval de Nice'

• Position the 'Carnaval de Nice' tulips above the first layer, again with the pointed ends facing upwards. They do not need to sit directly between the bulbs below, as the emerging shoots will naturally find their way towards the surface.
• Cover with another layer of compost.

Top layer - Fritillaria meleagris Mixed

• Plant the fritillaria bulbs closest to the surface, spreading them evenly across the pot to create the lower-growing layer beneath the taller tulips.
• Finish with compost so the upper bulbs are comfortably covered, leaving a small gap below the rim of the pot for watering.
• Water thoroughly after planting and allow excess water to drain away.

What To Do On Arrival

• Open the pack as soon as it arrives and check the bulbs.
• For the best results, plant the bulbs as soon as practical. If planting needs to be delayed, keep them somewhere cool, dry, dark and well ventilated.

Where To Position Your Pot

• Place the container outdoors in a bright position, ideally somewhere receiving plenty of sun or light shade.
• There is no need to bring the bulbs indoors for winter. They actually benefit from the natural period of cold weather, which helps trigger their spring growth.
• Once planted, the bulbs require very little attention.
• Keep the compost slightly moist, but never saturated. During periods of regular autumn and winter rainfall, additional watering may not be necessary.
• Make sure drainage holes remain clear and consider standing the pot on feet to help excess water escape. The biggest winter threat to bulbs in containers is prolonged waterlogging rather than cold temperatures.
• If very severe frost is forecast, containers in particularly exposed positions can be moved temporarily against a sheltered wall, although the bulbs themselves are hardy.

As Growth Appears

• New shoots will begin pushing through as conditions improve.
• Water whenever the compost starts to dry, particularly as growth becomes stronger and flower buds develop. Pots can dry out surprisingly quickly during sunny or windy spring weather.
• For the strongest display, a general-purpose liquid feed can be applied occasionally once active growth is underway.

After Flowering

• Remove faded flowers once they have finished. This prevents the plants using energy to produce seed.
• Do not cut off the leaves while they are still green.
• Allow all foliage to remain naturally until it turns yellow and begins to die back. During this period, the leaves are feeding energy back into the bulbs for the following year's growth.

If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
