Product Information

This Astilbe Plum Bouquet Mix will certainly create an eye-catching display in your garden.

This collection is a mix of beautifully coloured spiked blooms that appear during the middle of summer and stand tall above shiny dark green foliage. They make excellent cut flowers but once faded, the old brown flower-heads provide winter interest. Extremely fragrant, they are very attractive to bees and butterflies.

Perfect for traditional cottage gardens, water gardens and cut flower gardens, they really are a versatile choice. They are a long-lived hardy perennial which will thrive in both full sun and shaded corners, but don't let the soil dry out, keep them well-watered.

Supplied as five bare root plants, ready to plant out.

Top Tips

It is best to plant Astilbes in either spring or autumn, so they have chance to establish before the warmest weather begins.

Care Information

  • Water several times a week through the first summer after planting.
  • If purchased during summer, plant straight away but keep it watered as it establishes, particularly when the weather is hot and dry.
  • Rich and moist soil conditions are needed for Astilbes to thrive. Well-rotted organic matter can be dug into the soil prior to planting to improve the conditions.
  • Plant in a lightly shaded area of the garden, as too much sun can lead to scorch on the leaves, particularly during high summer, while the soil can dry out quickly.

Planting:

  • The first step is to prepare the soil, ensuring the space is free of weeds, stones, or other debris.
  • Arrange each bare root Astilbe on the surface where you are aiming to plant, spaced roughly 50cm apart.
  • Now dig a hole roughly the depth and width of the existing clump, so you can just about fit it into the ground. Aim to bury just the roots and leave the base of the stems just above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil using your hands for smaller clumps, or your heel for the larger clumps.
  • Finally, water the plant well to leave the ground moist. This will help to settle the soil and avoid desiccation.
