Product Information

The Agapanthus, or African Lily is a spectacular perennial that will evoke an exotic feel in your garden. Popular throughout southern Europe, it will also grow happily in the UK.

‘Poppin’ Purple’ is a new reblooming variety. Whereas most Agapanthus flower for just a couple of months in summer, this superstar will bloom continuously from June right through to September. What’s more, the flowers are truly something special, with buds that are such a dark purple that they could be called black, exploding into incredibly intense violet flowers.

The semi-evergreen leaves are long, slender and strap like, growing in low, arching clumps which allow the flowers to stand out above them on their long, straight and strong stems, a characteristic that makes them ideal for cutting and creating bold floral arrangements.

Agapanthus will grow happily in the ground but are very well suited to container growing, and having their roots restricted can often result in more flowers. Growing in pots also makes winter protection easier.

Like all Agapanthus, ‘Poppin’ Purple’ loves rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and they tolerate drought well. Although winter hardy, some protection will be needed during the coldest winters. Provide a thick mulch in autumn to protect the plants against the hardest frosts, or bring container grown plants under cover.

Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots, ready for planting, growing to a height of 60cm (2ft) and spread of 45cm (1½ft).

Top Tips

  • You will often get more flowers when the roots are restricted, so this is certainly a plant that does better in a pot, which also makes it easier to protect during the winter.

Care Information

  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the spoil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser monthly from spring until flowering, then, from the end of September reduce watering and feeding to allow the foliage to harden.
  • In colder parts of the UK, cover the crown of the plant with a deep, dry mulch to protect the plants from hard frosts, or grow in a pot so they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
