Product Information

Spigelia marilandica, also known as the Indian pink, is a woodland wildflower that will bring subtle form and colour to your garden.

Unusual and very desirable, Spigelia is not usually available in the UK, and we're delighted to be able to offer it to you. It's a native of the US and thrives in woodland and other moist areas in dappled shade, although will be quite happy in sun as long as it is regularly watered.

The narrow, oval leaves are complimented with tubular, crimson flowers that burst open with a dazzling star at the end. These can reach around 5cm (2in) long and are bright crimson on the outside with a striking neon-yellow interior.

Hardy to -5C, the Indian Pink is best grown in a pot where it can be moved under cover during spells of freezing winter weather. It's easy to grow too, being quite undemanding, and makes a perfect plant for any garden or indeed any gardener!

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant straight out. Plants are deciduous, so no leaves October - April

Care Information

Planting Advice for Spigelia marilandica:

  • Best grown in moist, well-draining soil, plants can be positioned in sun or partial shade and will also tolerate drier conditions, providing they are kept regularly watered.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather especially newly established plants.
  • When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.
  • The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well to settle the soil and prevent drying out.

Aftercare for Indian Pink:

  • Water well after planting until established.
  • Mulch in spring.

Pruning Spigelia:

  • After flowering, remove spent blooms.
  • Plants can be tidied in the autumn.
