Description

This decorative, yet compact plant earns its keep in every season! Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-Mai', also known as the Fuji Cherry, is an ornamental delight with something fresh from spring to winter.

Its show begins in late winter to early spring, often before many other plants have woken from their slumber. Red buds cluster along zigzagging branches, giving the impression of movement as they seem to 'dance' in the breeze. These soon unfurl into soft, pale-pink flowers with crimson centres, each bloom a delicate contrast to the bare stems. It's a display that can transform even the simplest patio or garden into a scene worthy of a postcard.

After flowering, green leaves take over, providing a fresh backdrop for the warmer months. As autumn approaches, the foliage turns vivid shades of red and orange, adding a final burst of colour before winter. And when the leaves drop, the plant's graceful, architectural form takes centre stage, particularly striking when outlined by frost on a cold morning.

Compact in size, reaching around 250cm after a decade if left unpruned, 'Kojo-no-Mai' is perfect for small gardens, courtyards or large patio containers. It responds well to light pruning after flowering, allowing you to shape it to fit your space perfectly.

Fully hardy, it thrives in the UK climate without fuss, shrugging off frost, wind and fluctuating temperatures. It's a plant that asks for little but gives a lot, making it ideal for both experienced gardeners and those new to ornamental trees.

Top Tips

Best planted in autumn, from October to November choose a sheltered location (to protect the blossom when it emerges in the spring).

Care Information

Dig a square hole as deep as the roots and approximately 1.5 times as wide.
Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole to help the plant establish quicker.
Spread the roots gently and place into the planting hole.
Mix well rotted compost or manure with the soil taken from the hole and then use to backfill around the tree.
Keep well-watered until established.
Keep the area free of competing weeds and protect the tree with a rabbit guard if necessary to protect your young cherry tree.
Pruning your tree is not usually necessary unless you need to remove damaged or broken branches.
