Product Information

A relative of the well-known yellow Forsythia, this unusual deciduous shrub produces a stunning winter flower display just as the days start to lengthen to spring.

An easy to grow, compact shrub, the branches are covered with dainty, star-shaped, gorgeously fragrant white flowers - occasionally tinged with pink, each one with a yellow centre - which appear on bare stems before the leaves re-emerge.

The show doesn't end there either as the green leaves turn purple before they fall in the autumn, so you get year-round interest!

Reaching a compact 1.5m height and spread over 10 years, this white forsythia is perfect for smaller gardens, and can be grown in large pots for the patio too - so everyone can grow it, with or without a garden.

Preferring a sunny, sheltered location, the white forsythia is hardy to -6°C or more and needs very little pruning or maintenance. We supply an established plant in a 2L pot, ready for immediate planting.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your White Forsythia Abeliophyllum distichum:

  • Best in a sunny position protected from hard frost which can damage fresh shoots.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling)
Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you’re planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.

Aftercare advice for Abeliophyllum distichum:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.
  • After pruning, mulch with a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted compost or manure.

Pruning Advice for your white forsythia:

  • Prune after flowering in spring, cutting back some of the old wood to a vigorous side shoot.
  • Once established, after flowering in spring cut back every second or third flowered shoot to the base.
