Description

A patio-perfect crab apple tree, fashioned here into a stylish standard form! Grow great cooking apples from the comfort of your patio.

Dark green leaves stretch across this variety, turning a buttery shade of yellow before falling. In late spring, see fascinating cup-shaped pinkish white blossom, growing in abundance. These blooms are highly fragrant and are soon followed by autumnal golden-yellow apples.

These fruits hold onto the ball-shaped head of foliage for many weeks, which despite having a sour taste, can be transformed into delicious kitchen recipes, such as crab apple jelly. Any fruit left on the tree will soften after a frost - be sure to leave it alone to feed wild birds.

What’s more, ‘Golden Hornet’ is self-fertile, so does not need to be grown near other varieties for pollination and to produce crops. Very attractive to the beneficial insects of the garden, having even been recommended by the RHS as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’.

Easy to grow, compact, and tolerant of garden pollutants, this cropping tree thrives best in a sunny spot of your garden.

Supplied as an established lollipop-like standard tree in an 18cm pot, approximately 80-100cm tall, ready to plant and display.

Top Tips
Keep well watered, and if growing in a pot, use a good quaity, soil-based compost.
Care Information

Planting Your Standard Tree:

  • These roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots, and mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil removed from the hole.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown plants thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, before watering well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Care:

  • When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly.
  • Easy to maintain, pruning is just a case of removing dead, diseased and crossing branches in late winter, while the tree is still dormant. Carefully prune to shape to retain the attractive standard form.
  • Make sure you keep plants growing in containers well fed and watered.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
