Product Information

Gooseberry 'Invicta' is the number 1 outstanding Gooseberry variety for home gardeners, producing big crops of classic green berries, almost twice as many as any other variety.

‘Invicta’ is one of our favourite gooseberry plant varieties and it is also mildew resistant, making it very easy to grow for even a novice ‘grow your own’ gardener. It has good vigour, so supports the big crops well in your garden and is winter hardy so can be left outdoors all year round. Each summer ‘Invicta’ produces numerous large green fruits which are sweet enough to eat straight off the bush but are also ideal for cooking with – something a little bit different to strawberries and raspberries that tend to be grown in home gardens.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

There’s nothing better than growing your own, and this gooseberry will add a real decorative feature to patios, or even borders where it will add height and interest. ‘Invicta' really is the all-round Gooseberry for gardens - why not try one this year?

Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, ready to plant now.

Top Tips

Gooseberries will be ready for picking from early July - birds love the berries so protect the ripening fruit with fine gauge netting if you need to.

Care Information

Care of your gooseberry:

  • Mulch to conserve soil moisture.
  • Water regularly and especially during dry spells. Container-grown gooseberries should be watered as soon as their soil dries out.
  • In late winter, feed with a balanced granular feed. Avoid feeding the plants with too much nitrogen because this can encourage weak growth, which can be prone to mildew.
  • Plant bare-root gooseberries between late autumn and early spring, and container-grown plants at any time, avoiding waterlogged, dry or frozen soil.
  • Standards should be staked to keep them stable.

Pruning your gooseberry:

  • In Year one, in early spring of the first year after planting, prune the main stems back by half.
  • From year two onwards, in November, shorten the main stems that you pruned in the spring back to half of their new growth. Any new side shoots that have grown from the main shoots can also be either shortened by half or removed if they are not needed. At the same time, remove any suckers or side shoots that are damaged or crossing. Aim for a goblet shape.
  • After year two, bushes just need a simple twice-yearly trim. In July, trim all new side shoots to 5 leaves.
  • In winter, cut back main stems by half their new growth and any side shoots back to 2 buds (these are the shoots that you trimmed in July). Any stems that are damaged, dead or out of place can also be removed.
