Product Information

Butia capitata, also known as the Jelly Palm or the Pindo Palm, is a beautiful feather palm, and a stunning addition to a Mediterranean or tropical themed garden, with amazing, fan-shaped fronds which form graceful arches from the trunk.

This specimen palm is 1.2m tall when we ship it to you, so it's already one of our largest palm trees and ready to make an instant impact on your patio or balcony! Just imagine sitting under the tropical leaves as you sip on a cocktail in the summer!

Hardy down to -5C when established, larger plants fare much better in UK winter, so we've selected the largest size we can for you to plant in a warm, sheltered site, preferably near a south facing wall. We also recommend protection from any severe weather as frosts and cold winds can shred the leaves.

Winner of a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be guaranteed that this is a garden-worthy plant that has been trialled and tested for its suitability to grow in UK gardens.

Supplied as an established potted plant, already approx. 1.2m tall (including pot), Butia will ultimately reach a height of around 4m in the UK with a spread of around 1.5m.

Top Tips

If the summer is hot, your palm tree may produce apricot-sized fruits which are edible.

Care Information

  • Grow in any well-drained soil, in full sun. If your sol is on the heavy side, consider growing it in a pot.
  • Needs protection from strong or cold drying winds and will need protection from hard winter frosts by wrapping the leaves with fleece to protect the crown.
  • If you live in an area prone to frost, you should consider growing Butia in a pot so that it can be moved under cover if necessary.
  • If potting, use a soil-based compost, such as John Innes No 2, with extra grit added to improve stability of the post and help drainage.
  • Check plants and repot every two years in spring so that the soil does not become exhausted and stale.
  • Add controlled-release fertiliser granules to the pot or use a liquid feed every two week from mid-spring to late summer.
  • Maintenance is simple - just cut off the leaves when they turn brown.
