Product Information

A cottage garden classic and a contemporary must-have for the modern garden, bearded irises are an instantly recognisable heralds of the summer.

Iris Germanica 'Ambassadeur' is a bearded iris with a striking smoky bronze, dark velvety-maroon bicolored bloom. Although the overall colour effect is a vibrant purple, the blooms of 'Ambassadeur' shift in tone throughout the day depending on the light, becoming purple, red, bronze, and all colours in between.

Totally winter hardy, irises return each year getting bigger and better with each season. Ideal for naturalising, plants are drought tolerant once established and are really easy to grow.

One of the taller irises, Ambassadeur is a widely branched, relatively later blooming variety with flowers held on stout, erect stems - which makes it perfect for cutting.

Easy to grow in any well-drained soil in full sun, this iris is also pest resistant and is supplied as an established, well-rooted specimen in a 9cm pot, ready for planting out as long as the soil isn't waterlogged.

Top Tips

Irises will flower best when left to chill over the winter and exposed to full sun in the summer, so plant where they are not covered or shaded by other plants.

Care Information

  • A sunny position in well-drained soil is ideal for growing iris.
  • Bare root irises are best planted in the autumn so that they have the winter to chill, while potted plants can be planted out any time as long as the soil is not sodden.
  • Bearded irises prefer an open position where the rhizomes can bake in the summer sun, without being shaded by other plants.
  • These perennials require a very free-draining soil, so improve heavy clay soils with plenty of grit and well-rotted compost prior to planting.
  • When planting iris, ensure that the rhizome sits just at the soil surface as they are prone to rot if planted too deeply.
  • Irises dislike disturbance so they are unlikely to flower in the first year of planting or after division.
