  • Provide winter protection from frost.

Care Information

Planting advice for your Gunnera manicata:

  • Grow in permanently moist, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade.
  • When planting, a layer of pond liner can be placed in the bottom of the planting hole to retain moisture.
  • Shelter from cold drying winds which can damage and brown the leaves.
  • Protect crowns by mulching during the winter months to avoid frost damage and rotting.

Aftercare Advice for Gunnera Giant Chilean Rhubarb:

  • Gunnera manicata is tolerant of temperature to -12C but will not survive being wet and frozen. New growth is also susceptible to frost damage, so we recommend protecting the crowns over winter.
  • Remove the leaves by cutting off at the base near the crown then place some dry straw, fern or bracken, over the crowns before covering them with the leaves to form a tent, removing any stalk left from the leaves.

Pruning Advice for your Gunnera:

  • The flowering stem can be removed after blooming.
  • Trim back any dead brown leaves when growth commences in the spring.
