Product Information

Ornamental grasses have etched their way into our gardens, and our hearts, thanks to the impressive shows they put on for extended periods of the year.

This colourful collection does what it says on the tin – offering you unique and vivid leaves, including red, golden-yellow, and even matt black.

There are so many uses for these ornamental grasses. Combine with vibrant summer-flowering blooms, like Begonia or Dahlia, fill up your favourite patio containers, or use them as soft buffers for the edge of your garden’s pathways. We’re sure your neighbours won’t be growing these exceptional plants!

Both novice and experienced growers are continuing to see the impact ornamental grasses can have on their gardens, so why don’t you join the wave of popularity?

Supplied as a set of three established grasses in 9cm pots, ready for planting. Including one each of the following:

  • Imperata ‘Red Baron’ – Also known as ‘Blood Grass’, and it is not hard to understand why. Despite being slightly smaller than other varieties, this grass boasts cranberry red leaves in summer that need to be seen to be believed. Young blade-like leaves emerge green in an upright fashion, before darkening to the red, then a luxurious burgundy when autumn rolls arounds.
  • Ophiopogon ‘Nigrescens’ – An award winner! Proud holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This strappy leaved perennial is evergreen, bringing matt black leaves to your garden, regardless of the month.
  • Hakonechloa ‘All Gold’ – The Japanese Forest Grass provides yearly semi-evergreen displays of golden-yellow variegated leaves. Grow the colour how you like it, plant in full sun for bright yellow leaves, or keep it in shade for a pale lime shade.

Top Tips

These ornamental grasses are deciduous, cut back stems close to ground level from late February through to the end of March before new growth starts.

Care Information

  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • When planting a number of grasses, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.
The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well to settle the soil.
  • Clumps can be dug up and divided in autumn or spring to give you more plants.
