Product Information

Hypericum, or St, Johnís Wort, is a very old and traditional garden plant and ĎHidcoteí is one of the most popular varieties.

It has semi-evergreen foliage and large, oval mid-green leave which form a dense bush. From June to October it is covered in masses of golden yellow flowers up to 5 cm (2 in) across, which is large for a Hypericum. These are followed by glossy orange berries that eventually turn black.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Hypericum is easy to look after and very difficult to damage. No matter how hard you cut it back, itíll keep on growing back and is completely hardy. Grow in moist but well drained soil in sun or partial shade are youíll be rewarded with a superb display of foliage, flowers and berries.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2 L pot, ready to plant, growing to a height of 1.2 m (4 ft) and spread of 1.5 m (5 ft).

Planting Advice for Hypericum

  • Water your potted shrub well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a conditioner such as well rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Pruning Advice

  • Once established, Hypericum is low maintenance and needs little or no regular pruning.
  • Flowers are produced at the ends of new growth, so prune back plants in early spring.
