Description

If you’re after something truly special, Acer 'Taylor' is an absolute showstopper. This compact Japanese Maple has been bred to impress, and it really does with colour-changing leaves across the seasons.

So many of our customers agree that it's a cracking little tree that doesn’t just sit quietly in the background, it brings a splash of colour wherever you plant it. Pots and borders? Either will benefit from a ‘Taylor’ tree.

Foliage starts off bright pink in spring, becoming soft green edged with cream as the season progresses, reaching a beautiful lime green in autumn.

We’re often asked for plants that bring impact without taking up too much space, and this is a corker. 'Taylor' stays compact and manageable, without exceeding 2m tall in 10 years. It forms a tidy shape and looks magical against darker evergreens or gravel gardens. Try pairing it with ferns or hostas in a semi-shaded spot.

Plus, it’s not a delicate little plant, despite how it may look! It’s fully hardy and just needs shelter from strong winds and the harshest sun to keep those vibrant leaves looking their best. Like most acers, it likes slightly acidic, free-draining soil – nothing too fancy – and a little mulch in spring will keep it happy for years.

Supplied as an established plant, 50-70cm tall, in a 3 litre pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
  • Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun will be tolerated.
Care Information

Planting Advice for your Acer

  • If your soil is slightly acidic, then you have the perfect conditions to grow Japanese maples - however do not worry if you have not as most can be grown in other soils as long as they are not wet, dry or very alkaline.
  • If growing in a pot, use a 50/50 mix of ericaceous and multipurpose compost if you can - although again don't worry overly about this.
  • If planting in the garden, prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork, incorporating organic matter as needed to improve moisture retention and condition.
  • Plant your Acer so that the top of the root ball is just slightly below ground level.
  • Fill the planting hole with soil and heel well in. Water well.

Aftercare advice

  • Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated as long as the plant is well watered.
  • Avoid exposed places as leaves can suffer with windburn (scorch), especially if the plant is dry.
  • Allow your Japanese Maple to get used to a whole day in the sun by starting it off in the shade, then standing it in its final sunny spot (in pot or in the garden soil) for one hour longer every day for a week.
  • Water regularly and deeply.
  • Feed with our specialist Acer feed.
  • Mulch every couple of years with well-rotted garden compost or well-rotted manure or leaf mould.

Pruning advice for your Acer

  • Acers generally do not need pruning, just remove any branches that are dead or damaged.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
