Commonly known as the New Zealand pepper tree, Pseudowintera is an unusual foliage plant for your garden, creating an evergreen backdrop for your other plants with its multicoloured foliage.
The fabulous, gold-green leaves are heavily blotched with deep ruby-red and are produced in abundance, along with clusters of small, pale greenish-yellow flowers in spring. These are followed by spherical red berries maturing to black in summer which are particularly appealing to birds.
Very easy to grow, and undemanding in its care, Pseudowintera thrives both in a flower border and when grown as a focal plant in a pot on the patio - so there's no reason why you can't have one and enjoy its beauty no matter what size of garden you have.
Typically growing to around 1.5m (5ft) in height, this spreading, bushy shrub is supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot.
Best in rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or light shade Pseudowintera needs shelter from the wind.
If growing indoors or under glass, grow your pepper tree in loam-based potting compost (JI No.3) in full light or bright filtered light.
Water regularly and thoroughly in the growing season and sparingly at other times.
Trim shoots only to maintain shape or to remove, dead, dying and diseased growth.
