For a taste of pure luxury nothing beats freshly cut asparagus and for a small investment you can save a small fortune when you grow your own compared to expensive shop bought spears. Canadian bred Guelph Millennium is one of the latest 'all male hybrids which give much larger crops of sweet tasting spears compared to older kinds as they set no seed which otherwise weaken the plant. Millenium is perhaps tthe best of all and was best of over 300 varieties from araound the world in a recent East Anglian growing trial.
Plant in rows - 5 plants will establish into a bed to feed a family well for many years - then a little patience is needed as it's best not to cut until the third year to allow plants to strengthen. Thereafter pick as often as you can from late April to late June. The 21st is the traditional day to stop picking after when the spears should be allowed to develop into fern for the rest of the year. Remove fern in late winter and fertilise and wait for the next crop. Keep your asparagus bed tidy and weed free aand this modern variety will crop for 15 years or more.
Delivered as growing plants in 3L pots for rapid establishment.
