Why Bougainvillea Is The Ultimate Mediterranean Patio Plant

Bring That Holiday Garden Feeling Home With A Sun-Loving Climber

Truly as uplifting as they come… just look at the vivid red bracts of this Bougainvillea. It feels like summer has properly arrived!

Bring that warm, Mediterranean feeling into your garden, without waiting years for a climber to grow into place. We supply this red Bougainvillea as an established, nursery potted plant, already trained against its own trellis support, so it adds height straight away and gives your patio, doorway or sunny seating area an instant lift.

The red papery bracts of Bougainvillea

Those papery red bracts are what make Bougainvillea so famous. Often mistaken for flowers, they create the bold, sun-soaked display that you see spilling over walls and balconies in warmer climates. In the UK, the trick is to treat it as a glamorous patio plant for summer, then protect it when temperatures fall.

A Brilliant Choice For Pots, Patios And Sunny Doorways

Bougainvillea looks fantastic in a large decorative pot, where you can position it exactly where the colour will have the most impact. Try it beside a south-facing doorway, on a sheltered terrace, against a warm wall or near a garden table where you can enjoy that holiday-inspired colour up close.

It loves warmth and sunshine, so give it the brightest, most sheltered spot available through summer. Good drainage is important too, especially in a container. Water regularly during warm weather, but do not leave the roots sitting in cold, wet compost.

Bougainvillea is not frost hardy, but that is easily managed. Simply move it into a bright greenhouse, conservatory or frost-free indoor space when temperatures drop, then enjoy bringing it back outside when the sunshine returns.

For instant Mediterranean style, vivid colour and a real sense of summer theatre, Bougainvillea is hard to beat!

Growing Tips For Bougainvillea Red on Trellis
  • For UK gardeners, it is recommended to grow this variety in a pot or container. Bougainvilleas thrive in pots, which makes it easier to move them indoors for vital winter protection.
  • Use a container at least 30cm wide with drainage holes, filled with a mix of multi-purpose compost and grit or sand.
  • Prepare a planting hole twice the width of the existing root ball and roughly the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its nursery pot and plant at a similar level in its new container.
  • Position in full sun – in fact the more sun, the better! A south-facing wall, patio or balcony is ideal.
  • If soil conditions are heavy, be sure to add grit or sand to the mix to boost drainage.
Aftercare and Ongoing Maintenance:
  • Keep slightly dry – Bougainvillea prefer moderate watering. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before watering again. Avoid overwatering as too much water can lead to root rot and the production of fewer flowers.
  • Protect from frost by moving to an indoor spot for winter, before growing in a sun-soaked spot of the garden through summer. From October to April, move your potted Bougainvillea to a conservatory, greenhouse or bright indoor spot, ideally above 5C.
  • From spring to late summer, feed with a high-nitrogen fertiliser weekly to encourage strong growth.
  • Once the bracts start to develop colour, switch to a high-potash feed, such as tomato fertiliser, to boost flowering.
Pruning Advice:
  • Trim lightly in early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
  • Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.
  • Be mindful of thorns when pruning or handling.
  • Reduce watering and avoid feeding during the dormant period.
