Grow your own fruit trees, from blossom to bite
Taking that first bite of fruit picked straight from their own tree is a moment every gardener remembers. Warm from the sun, full of juice, and bursting with flavour that simply does not exist on a supermarket shelf. And once you have tasted it, there is no going back.
Homegrown fruit tastes better for a very simple reason – it is allowed to ripen properly. Shop-bought fruit is picked early so it can survive storage, transport and shelf life. That early picking often sacrifices flavour. But when grown by you and allowed to ripen on the tree, sugars develop fully, aromas deepen and textures improve.
Early spring is a brilliant time to plant fruit trees, right alongside autumn. The soil is warming, roots settle quickly, and the tree has the entire growing season ahead to establish itself, whether planting apples, pears, cherries or apricots.
More than just beneficial to the palate, fruit trees also produce clouds of spring blossom, attracting and feeding early pollinators.
