Allium ‘Nigrum’

A true hardy perennial, Allium ‘Nigrum’ is instantly recognisable for its white, globe-shaped flower heads above broad, blue-green leaves.

This is an easy performer and will standout regardless of the bed or border that it is planted in, while also being known as one of the best Alliums for neutralising through grass.

Allium ‘Moly’

Truly worthy of the ‘ornamental onion’ title, Allium ‘Moly’ would be a breathtaking addition to any bulb mixture.

Remarkably pretty clusters of star-shaped, buttery yellow blooms appear to bring some early season summer cheer.

The sunny yellow colour contrasts so well against the strap-like foliage, to produce a head-turning look.

Flowers in May and June, plant from September to December.

Allium ‘Drumsticks’

Absolutely loved by friendly insects, ‘Drumsticks’ boast unique and long-lasting flowerheads.

Blooming in a show-stopping shade of purple, this variety works so well combined with other Allium varieties, such as those seen in this mix!

Planting advice for your Allium Collection:

Find a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs in early to mid-autumn in a sheltered space to prevent the top-heavy flower spikes from getting blown over and damaged.

Dig over the soil and remove any weeds before planting. Water well straight after planting, saturating the soil around the bulbs. Once established, Alliums are drought tolerant.

In borders, plant bulbs in early autumn at a depth of about four times the diameter of the bulbs.

Alliums will also do well in deep pots with a good general-purpose potting compost and a handful of horticultural grit added.

Top tip! Underplant with hostas, ferns or other low-growing, hardy perennial plants to help disguise the leaves as they fade.

Aftercare advice for Alliums:

  • After planting, use a general-purpose feed such as our Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser.
  • Dried flower heads can be removed and made into indoor decorations or left on the plants to self-seed.
  • Divide Alliums every three to four years or when the plants begin to look overcrowded and blooming decreases.
  • Lift the bulbs with a garden fork or spade and pull the bulbs apart.
  • Replant some in the original location and plant the remainder in a new location.
  • The leaves die down at flowering time, so it’s best to plant Alliums where this foliage is masked by that of other plants.
  • Avoid removing them while still green, as they provide the bulbs with energy for the following season.
