Plant of the Month – December 2025

Amaryllis ‘Dancing Queen’

When the garden outside slows down for winter, there’s still one plant ready to put on the greatest show of the season – Amaryllis ‘Dancing Queen’. With its candy-striped, double blooms and effortless growing habit, it transforms any indoor space into a carnival of colour and cheer.

Growing an Amaryllis bulb feels like a little bit of magic happening right before your eyes. One day, you’re planting a simple bulb, and before long, up shoots a strong stem crowned with huge, frilled flowers that could stop anyone in their tracks. ‘Dancing Queen’ is one of the most spectacular varieties we’ve ever seen – its scarlet and white petals twist and layer like a festive firework bursting into life. Perfect for brightening up those shorter winter days, it’s a joy from start to finish.

Why You’ll Love Growing Amaryllis ‘Dancing Queen’

If you’ve never tried growing an amaryllis before, ‘Dancing Queen’ is the perfect place to start. It’s incredibly easy to grow indoors, requiring very little attention for a spectacular reward. Simply pot the bulb in good compost, water sparingly, and watch as thick, sturdy stems appear within weeks, each topped with huge, double trumpet blooms up to 20cm across.

The candy-cane stripes of scarlet and white are nothing short of breathtaking – bright, festive and guaranteed to lift your spirits through the darkest days of winter. Because these are premium-sized bulbs, each one has enough energy to produce multiple flower stems, giving weeks of continuous colour and impact.

They make brilliant Christmas gifts too. Whether displayed on a sunny windowsill, used as a table centrepiece, or given to a loved one, the ‘Dancing Queen’ never fails to impress.

You’ve Purchased An Amaryllis Bulb, Here’s How To Plant And Care For It!
  • On arrival: Unpack your bulb straight away. If you’re not planting immediately, store it in a cool, dry place until ready.
  • Planting: Choose a pot just a little wider than the bulb and half-fill with multi-purpose compost. Position the bulb so the top third sits above the soil. Water lightly after planting.
  • Positioning: Place the pot in a bright, warm spot indoors, ideally around 20C. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators.
  • Watering: Keep compost just moist, never soggy. Water sparingly until growth starts, then increase slightly once the flower stems appear.
  • After flowering: Once blooms fade, cut off the flower stems but keep the leaves. Continue watering and feeding every few weeks to help recharge the bulb for next year.
  • Winter care: Allow the plant to rest in a cool, dry place from late summer. When ready to restart, bring it into warmth and begin watering again to trigger new growth.
