How to Grow Dense and Impressive Hedgerows in Your Garden

Dense hedges are a remarkable way of introducing that much sought-after privacy, security, and beauty to your garden.

Whether you are planting Hazel or Hawthorn, if you want to achieve a particularly impressive, full, and healthy hedge, here are a few tips for you to follow.

  • Plant bare root plants – bare root hedging plants are the most affordable option, and they’re just as easy to plant and grow as pot grown plants.
  • Plant in a double staggered row to fill in any gaps and create a denser hedge.
  • Be patient. It takes time for a hedge to mature – so don’t expect it to look perfect overnight.

Here are some specific recommendations for planting density:

  • For bare root and pot grown plants: 5-7 plants per metre

How to maintain a dense hedgerow:

  • During the first few years after planting, water the hedgerow regularly, especially during hot and dry periods. Once established, the hedgerow may only need occasional watering during drought conditions.
  • Keep the area around the hedges free of weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and moisture. Hand-pull weeds or use a hoe to remove them gently.
  • Trim the hedgerow once or twice a year to maintain its desired shape and encourage dense growth. Start trimming early in the growing season to allow the hedgerow to recover before winter.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring or early summer to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Follow the instructions on the label for proper application rates.
  • Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi can be used to increase the nutrient and water update of the hedge.
  • Monitor the hedgerow for signs of pests or diseases. If problems arise, take appropriate control measures using organic or least-toxic methods whenever possible.
  • Growing a dense hedgerow takes time and patience. Allow the plants to mature and fill in the spaces and enjoy the process of creating a beautiful and functional addition to your garden.

With a little planning and patience, you can grow a beautiful dense hedge and add a protected look to your garden in no time!
