Allium ‘Pink Jewel’
One the best bulbs to plant this month is Allium ‘Pink Jewel’. This is a real showstopper with striking colour, strong structure, and a long season of interest. Unlike many of its purple cousins, ‘Pink Jewel’ delivers soft, true-pink globes that bring a fresh, romantic note to borders and containers, carrying your garden beautifully from late spring into early summer.
It’s pollinator friendly, loved by bees and butterflies, and it doubles up as a florist’s dream cut flower too. The best bit? Once planted, these bulbs will reward you year after year with effortless beauty.
Why Allium ‘Pink Jewel’ Deserves a Place in Your Garden
Where most alliums stick to bold purples or whites, this one breaks the mould with its rosy-pink blooms that simply glow in the early summer sun.
Each globe is tightly packed with hundreds of star-shaped florets, perched neatly on strong stems that reach up to 80cm tall. The effect is both bold and elegant, architectural without ever feeling heavy.
Pop them among hardy geraniums, salvias, roses or ornamental grasses and you’ll see how brilliantly they knit a border together, adding rhythm and movement that looks straight out of a designer’s notebook.

In pots, they’re just as effective, giving a clean, modern edge with very little effort. And when you snip a few stems for the house, you’ll see why florists rate them so highly. Those compact heads hold their shape beautifully and last ages in a vase.
Plant it once and it will come back reliably every year. Add in the fact that bees and butterflies can’t resist the nectar-rich flowers, and you’re not only adding beauty to your space, you’re also doing your bit for biodiversity.
If you want a plant that offers high impact with low effort, that gets the neighbours asking “what is that?”, and that truly lifts your planting in May and June, then this is the bulb for you.
Why You Should Be Planting Allium Bulbs In Your Garden This Month
October is the perfect time to plant allium bulbs. The soil is still warm from summer, giving bulbs the best chance to establish strong roots before winter sets in. By getting them into the ground now, you’re setting yourself up for a brilliant display the following May and June, right when your garden needs a lift between spring bulbs fading and summer perennials really kicking in.
Alliums are wonderfully reliable, they don’t need much fuss, and once planted, they’ll return year after year.
You’ve Purchased Allium ‘Pink Jewel’ – Here’s How to Plant and Grow It!
- Unpack your bulbs straight away and store them in a cool, dry place if you’re not planting immediately. Don’t let them dry out or sit somewhere damp.
- Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. Dig holes about three times the depth of the bulb and space them around 15cm apart. Plant with the pointed end facing upwards.
- Use a good-quality multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage. Space bulbs close together for a bold display, but make sure they aren’t touching. Discover the benefits of our Premium Professional Compost!
- Give them a good soak after planting. After that, water only during prolonged dry spells in spring – bulbs don’t like sitting in soggy soil.
- In spring, when the shoots appear, feed with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong stems and vibrant blooms.
- Once flowers fade, you can leave the seed heads to dry for architectural interest or cut them back if you prefer. Let the foliage die back naturally, as this feeds the bulb for next year.
- No need to lift in winter – ‘Pink Jewel’ is perfectly hardy in UK gardens. Just make sure drainage is good to avoid waterlogging.
