Standard Holly Trees
As the festive season approaches, there’s no more iconic symbol of winter cheer in the garden than Standard Holly Trees. So, how could it not be our ‘Plant of the Month’ for December?
Standard Hollies boast so much Christmas charm, with vibrant red berries and glossy green leaves that remain coated in colour across all seasons of the year.
While they shine brightest during the winter holidays, Holly trees actually offer year-round interest. Their evergreen foliage provides a lush backdrop in any garden, and their berries can persist into the new year.
Plus, Holly trees are thankfully easy to grow and care for, so are ideal for both experienced and beginner gardeners alike.
Our Ilex ‘Blue Maid’ are female plants, so boast berries in autumn and early winter. These are decoratively fashioned into a ‘standard-form’, just like a lollipop shape with a head of foliage and berries held above a clean, branch-less stem.
This variety is perfect for growing in pairs, for framing festive displays, doorways, and entrances, or adorning the patio or decking.
We offer a selection of two Holly Trees, already 80-100cm tall, and supplied with a pair of decorative 34cm pinecone-style planters, so the trees can be planted and placed outside straight away. This collection is even perfect as a gift for a loved one.
Tempted to Bring Some Festive Cheer to Your Garden? Here’s How to Grow Holly:
- Holly trees should be planted in free-draining soil, ideally in a spot that basks in plenty of sunlight. In fact, the more light your trees have access to, the more leaves will be produced.
- They really are a trouble-free plant, with moderately fast growth.
- Hollies need almost no maintenance if you keep them well-watered for the first couple of years to enable them to establish and during dry spells. Always avoid overwatering as this can cause root rot.
- For berry production, it is worth investing in a separate, male holly tree and planting nearby.
- Pruning couldn’t be much simpler – give the trees a trim to shape in either late winter or early spring. Aim to maintain the attractive standard shape. This will keep the decorative plants looking their best and can even encourage new growth.
Embrace the Christmas season in your garden with our Holly Trees.
