It’s National Allotment Week! Take a moment to appreciate these pockets of green that have become havens for people across the UK. Allotments offer a blend of relaxation, productivity, community spirit, and an all-round escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
This year’s theme revolves around biodiversity and the role allotments play in providing shelter and food for wildlife in places where they would otherwise be left wanting. Growing is green, improving the quality of the air around us and mitigating the carbon emissions produced in everyday life – these are all themes that organisers of this year’s National Allotment Week, The National Allotment Society, wish to shine a light on.
Allotment owners up and down the country will be encouraged to show off their sites as part of this national initiative, which has been held for more than two decades, this year from Monday, August 12 to Sunday, August 18.
Even if you don’t run one yourself, those local to you may be planning special events this week to cover all manner of topics, ranging from soil health and the best plants to grow, to wildlife tips and pest control solutions. Head along and you may get some hints and tips to implement in your own garden!
Biodiversity on an Allotment
Biodiversity revolves around the richness of variety in a green space, and what efforts are made to encourage other life to grow or visit.
While many view an allotment as a space to grow veggies, they are also loved by wildlife. Allotments provide nectar to pollinators, boost soil quality, and house many habitats in one space. Think compost heaps, mixed planting schemes, and hedgerows – each attractive to different insects, birds, and mammals.
How You Can Get Involved in National Allotment Week
Are you particularly proud of the efforts you put in on your allotment? Now is the time to shout about it! With the weather finally looking summery, it’s time to leave the house. Head down to your allotment and tell passersby about the national week and what steps you make for biodiversity.
Plus, you can head online to share your success, pictures and stories on social media. We’d certainly love to hear about them on our dedicated Facebook page here!
The National Allotment Society will also be sharing feel-good stories through the week too.
