How to Plant Hardy Fan Palm Trachycarpus Fortunei

Grow Trachycarpus in any well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or lightly dappled shade. If you live in an area prone to frost, it would be beneficial to grow the palm in a pot. Luckily this variety thrives in plants pots just as well as it will in the ground, so it is up to you. When planting, use a soil – based compost, with extra grit to improve stability and help with drainage.

An excellent way to fully enjoy Trachycarpus is to plant it directly into a pot for the first four or five years where it’ll grow to between one and two metres. Water it well and once fully established you can then choose your location in the garden to plant it directly into the soil.

Trachycarpus can withstand full sun and loves a free draining area. It’s fully drought resistant, not only withstanding the hottest of summers but also growing beautifully in these conditions.

How to Care For Hardy Fan Palm Trachycarpus Fortunei

Trachycarpus will need protection from strong or cold drying winds and protection from hard winter frosts by wrapping the leaves.

Add controlled-release fertiliser granules to the pot or use a liquid feed every two week from mid-spring to late summer. Check plants and repot every two years in spring so that the soil does not become exhausted and stale.

In terms of pruning, simply cut off the leaves when they turn brown and over time, an upright, woody, fibrous trunk is formed.
