Runner Bean Streamline

• Runner beans require support from canes or netting to a height of approx. 1.8m.
• In hot weather, mist the flowers with tepid water in the evening to help pods form.

How to grow runner beans

• Sow indoors for surest results, from April to May, 2.5cm deep in individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions, avoiding frosts, before planting out 25cm apart, when frosts are over. Allow 45cm between rows. Provide poles or netting for plants to climb.
• Or sow outdoors, from May to June, where they are to crop, 5cm deep, directly into finely prepared soil that has already been watered. For best results, dig in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. Delay sowing if soil is cold or waterlogged. Sow two seeds together, 30cm between each position. Allow 45cm between rows. Thin to leave the stronger plant. Water well until plants are established. Provide poles or netting for plants to climb. Water regularly, particularly in dry weather, to maintain quality of crops.

Harvest: July to October. Pick beans regularly to encourage further cropping.
