Product Information

Six exceptional ferns for a mysterious jungle-like feel, with elegant, clumped foliage and some evergreen coverage.

Perfect problem-solvers for ground cover, these ferns are easy to plant, grow, and maintain, while retaining a healthy look across many months of the year - some even remain full of colour regardless of the season!

Bring a touch of nature to those tricky-to-fill spaces of the garden, including awkward corners, damp borders, and woodland bedding.

Supplied as a set of six plugs, ready to grow on before planting out, including one each of the following varieties:

  • Japanese Painted Fern – Shimmering silvery fronds gracefully arch and change in colour across the months, including flashes of green, purple, and red. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Also known as Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum'. Grows up to H40cm x W120cm.

  • Korean Rock Fern – Evergreen fern with dark-veined fronds tinted in purple when young, maturing to a rich green. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Also known as Polystichum tsussimense. Grows up to H50cm x W50cm.
  • Japanese Lace Fern – Arching lance-like golden yellow fronds evolve to a dark green. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Also known as Polystichum polyblepharum. Grows up to H60cm x W60cm.
  • Fortune's Cyrtomium – Instantly recognisable fern with black stems and light green fronds. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Also known as Cyrtomium fortune. Grows up to H60cm x W40cm.

Top Tips

Don't be afraid to plant in dry shade, just make sure these are kept well-watered.

Care Information

Planting:

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their supplied 'mini greenhouse' for up to a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in the dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover and still look exceptional before too long.
  • Put the plugs somewhere warm, light, and airy, such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. For best results, pot on using 9cm pots Shuttle Trays, using good quality, multi-purpose compost.
  • Give ferns a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.

Aftercare:

  • Low maintenance and easy to grow, just feed and water ferns regularly. Apply water and feed below the fronds until the ferns are fully established.
  • In spring, tidy and add a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each fern.

Pruning:

  • Little pruning is needed and don't cut back ferns in the autumn - leave the fronds as protection for the crowns of the plants.
  • Clean up any old or dead fronds in early spring before new fronds uncurl. Clear away any debris to encourage good air circulation.
